Time Warner Chooses 3Com Cable Modems for Los Angeles, Orange County Market
Business Wire - June 14, 1999 09:19
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--

3Com Modem Leadership and Recent CableLabs

Certification Named as Factors

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced that Time Warner Cable's Los Angeles Division (NYSE: TWX) (d.b.a. Time Warner Communications) has selected 3Com(R) cable modems to provide high-speed Internet access and multimedia services to the Los Angeles, Orange County market.

The 3Com external two-way cable modem recently earned CableLabs certification, a rigorous standard of approval for cable modems that offer the highest level of interoperability and performance among cable systems and assurance of competitive, quality products in the retail channels.

"CableLabs certification, combined with 3Com's superior product performance and marketing expertise, made them an obvious choice for Time Warner," said Paul Fisher, the vice president and general manager of Road Runner for the Los Angeles Division of Time Warner Communications. Time Warner Communications has recently begun offering Road Runner high-speed online service, with direct Internet access, in the Los Angeles and Orange County markets. Customers will be able to "surf the net" and access everything that is available on the Internet. Additionally, Road Runner users will enjoy access to customized local and national content, unlimited use and a constant connection to the Internet. For more information on Road Runner, visit the website www.socal.rr.com.

"This represents a major strategic relationship for 3Com and a significant opportunity as Time Warner deploys cable Internet access in multiple cities, accelerating the growth of the cable data market," said Levent Gun, vice president and general manager of 3Com's Cable Access Division. "High-speed cable access will allow consumers to participate in next generation Internet activities, such as high-quality video conferencing, interactive gaming and Internet telephony."

Cable modems provide high-speed access to the Internet by utilizing the bandwidth capacity of cable television networks, enabling potential download speeds far exceeding phone-based speeds of analog modems or ISDN devices. The digital service does not require a phone line and provides a reliable, low-cost connection to the Internet and other content.

"We believe the combined strength of Time Warner Communications and 3Com will enable the rapid growth of the data-over-cable market in Los Angeles and beyond," said Mr. Gun.
