Both. I think a lot of folks have tried to day-trade and have been hit hard with losses, or maybe margin calls, and have decided to not participate any longer. If you remember a few months back I talked about giving up heavy day trading and going much more into longer term and position trades, mainly bottom fishing stocks that have tanked.
Day trading seems to have become a zero-sum game.
And let's face it, Schwab is very expensive compared to what else is out there.

I'll answer that one. SCH has nothing to worry about.

Do you think Schwab is just feeling the pinch of increased competition? NO

a migration towards DEEP discount brokers? NO

or do you see this as more significant and perhaps telling us that a top may be near in the online trading boom? NO

The answer, IMO, is that the markets suck right now, especially I-nets. As everyone knows, people sell their winners too soon, and hold their losers too long. With most everyone holding losers, the volume of trades has dropped. All the other online brokers will report the same type of drops, it's just a matter of time.
