From today's Wall Street Journal:
CheckFree Plans Free Trial of Online Bill-Paying Service

CheckFree Holdings Corp., Atlanta, pushing to speed up consumer adoption of its online electronic bill-paying service, plans to begin providing the service free over the Internet, at least on a trial basis, according to a person familiar with the plan. CheckFree is in a race to firmly establish its online billing and payment services before competitors such as TransPoint, a joint venture that includes Microsoft Corp., Citigroup and First Data Corp., take the lead. CheckFree currently has about 2.8 million subscribers who pay between $5 and $10 a month to pay bills online. CheckFree is expected to unveil its strategy to analysts today as it kicks off a roadshow for a secondary offering of 3.8 million shares. The company has yet to work out details with the banks and others who provide the front end of its bill-paying service, but it is expected to fund the promotional efforts itself.
