A few points. 1) I do have a big problem with the way Steve from NJ presented the issue here. He seem to have concluded from a TV report which profiled a courageous woman who refused to have her female fetus aborted that female foeticide is endemic in India. Female foeticide does happen in India, but not to the extent that Steve thinks it does after discounting a TV report 50% . This goes for many other social evils too, such as slavery, untouchability and crimes against women. 2) Recognizing and seeking to control this perilous trend, the government of India outlawed prenatal sex determination on January 1st, 1996. The new law makes it illegal to advertise or perform the tests (with a few exceptions), and punishes the doctor, relatives who encourage the test and the woman herself with fines from ten to fifty thousand rupees and jail terms from three to five years. Unenforceable, unenforced and unobserved. Almost any doctor who does an ultrasound will tell you what the sex of the fetus is, if you ask. 3) Mohan, female infanticide is not unknown in the south. Cases were reported from Tamil Nadu last year. This evil is localized to a few pockets and not widespread over India as some seem to make out. The status of the girl child is in peril, however, with boys being given more education, health care, and even food, leading to a skewed male/female ratio in the population. 4) I really don't understand how an objective thinker can believe, at the same time, that female foeticide ought to be outlawed and that all women should have a choice to abort her pregnancy right up till delivery.
