Oscillator Market Has New Drivers, ABI Says ----------------------------------------------- I ran across the following VCO Industry info earlier this week. It bodes well for VARL. They are in the growth markets (high end VCOs / wireless telecom). They DO NOT participate in the low end, non-growth crystal oscillator market. All looking well for VARL going forward. ....Yo Yo ----------------------------------------------- OYSTER BAY, N.Y., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- In the new world of communications, it is not the computer and peripherals industries driving the oscillator market, but rather the growing worldwide wireless and wireline broadband market, according to a new report from Allied Business Intelligence, Inc. Over all, the market for VCOs (voltage controlled oscillators), crystals, and crystal-based oscillators is expected to grow from $1.2 billion in 1999 to $1.4 billion in 2004, according to the study ''Oscillators 2000: Frequency Control Markets, Competing Technologies, Applications & Vendors.'' Complex oscillator types, OXCOs (oven controlled crystal oscillators), VCXOs (voltage controlled crystal oscillators), and TCXOs (temperature compensated crystal oscillators), account for roughly 40% of this total figure but they are expected to demonstrate considerably higher growth than crystals and uncompensated clock oscillators. Despite the importance of computers and peripherals to the XO and crystal market, wireless communications is the largest overall end-use market for quartz and oscillators, accounting for 26% of the total frequency and timing market. This is attributed to the dominant role of wireless applications in the TCXO, OCXO, VCO, and, to lesser extent, VCXO markets. However, computers and peripherals are the most important sector in the clock and crystal segment of the overall quartz and oscillator market. Asia/Pacific remains the largest destination for devices in general but shipments to the area have slowed due to the sluggish local economy. Meanwhile, North America is the largest destination for high end oscillators such as OCXOs, with 56% of this market. ''Growth applications over the next five will primarily be the result of communications applications, with broadband platforms being a major contributor,'' said Andy Fuertes, ABI senior analyst and author of the report. Applications such as LMDS, ATM, 3G cellular, ADSL, cable modems, broadband satellite communications and HANS are expected to demonstrate double digit growth. But growth will be balanced by design outs and internal production. For example, one of the leading suppliers of ADSL chips and modems has already succeeded in eliminating VCXO modules from their designs. Production of low cost, small profile oscillators will help slow the effects of integration and design outs but designers in high-volume/consumer markets will eliminate these devices eventually.
