Four years after the first Europeans came to this country a ship carrying slaves made a pit stop in here. They needed some supplies and traded slaves for them. Then off they went to one of the Caribbean Islands to drop of there human beings for money. Slavery was was all over the "north" then. There were slaves in New York City. It just happened that the northern states ended the practice earlier and not by force for some reason. Maybe it wasn't so ingrained in the economy. I don't know.

More small slaveless farmers ...

That was the most fraudulent part of it. The fireeaters fooled everyone. Many secession votes were unanimous. Of course, East Tennessee and West Virginia remained loyal. No one has even been able to understand why poor white Southernors favored secession then and vote for anti-labor politicians now. Read MLKing's speech delievered in from the the Alabama state capitol at the end of the Selma-Montgomery march. He begged for poor whites and blacks to cooperate politically. Most poor whites were just as dumb as they ever were.

edit: I'm glad the North won.

Scallawag. I like Shelby's quote attributed to some Rebel prisoner. His Yankee captors asked him "Why are you fightin'?"

"'Cuz you're down here."
