So, you're just as guilty of the suburban sprawl encroaching on the idyllic farmland just beyond the poach of your cookie-cutter home. By the way, every metropolis was due in some or large part to migration of people from rural areas and foreign countries looking for work. Houston is no different.

Truedog, megalopolis refers to an integration of metro areas, and includes suburbs and even farmland. It is not endless concrete from D.C. to New York. Heck, even Rock Creek Park, in the middle of D.C., is an extensive woodland with conventional parks on the edges. I live in Annapolis, which is about 20 minutes from the Beltway, 30 minutes from the District line, and an hour, in moderate traffic, to downtown Washington. Annapolis has about 40, 000 people, maybe 90,000 in the broad surrounding area. The density drops off swiftly. During last years drought, I saw a couple of deer that had wandered into the edge of town and were hit by cars. I have seen foxes in my back yard (I am a little outside of town). On the main highway to Washington, I pass a horse farm. So, although I would not deny that other parts of the country are even less built up, the region in which I live permits various "lifestyles"...even living near cows, if that floats your boat! My stepmother's family lives about as far from the city as I do, on the Virginia side, and raise hogs and corn, and have a dairy farm as a neighbor...<g>...
