FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GCI ANNOUNCES SALE OF
FIBER OPTIC CAPACITY

ANCHORAGE, AK – GCI (NASDAQ:GNCMA) announced today it has completed a sale of fiber capacity in its long-haul fiber optic network to Alaska Communications Systems in a cash transaction of $19.5 million. The sale includes both capacity within Alaska, and between Alaska and the lower 48 states.

Under terms of the agreement, bandwidth capacity and terms of service will not be disclosed.

GCI's network is a high-capacity fiber optic communication system connecting Alaska's major population centers with the contiguous 48 states. GCI constructed the fiber optic network to meet its own capacity requirements, plus those of a limited number of potential broadband customers. GCI recently completed construction of its fiber optic network and began carrying commercial traffic on February 4, 1999.

GCI is an Alaska-based company that provides local and long-distance telephone, cable television, Internet and data communication services to more than 150,000 customers throughout the state. More information about GCI can be found at www.gci.com.
