OpenTV Announces Plans for First Deployment of Interactive Television in Canada
BUSINESS WIRE

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--OpenTV(R), Inc., a worldwide leader in interactive television software for the digital television receiver, today announced a five-year agreement with Image Wireless Communications, Inc., a digital MMDS operator and data services provider, to deliver interactive television to Saskatchewan, Canada, by the end of 1999.

The agreement represents the first time OpenTV's software technology for digital receivers -- to date installed in more than 2.5 million digital receivers worldwide -- will be deployed in Canada. Further, it will be the first time OpenTV's solution will be used as part of a Multipoint Multichannel Distribution System (MMDS).

According to the terms of the deal, Image Wireless Communications will license OpenTV's operating system technology for its digital MMDS TV network. Additionally, service providers and application developers may license OpenTV's authoring tools, such as the OpenTV Software Developers Kit(TM) and OpenAuthor(TM).

"This agreement underscores our commitment to address all interactive TV markets with a very open strategy," said Jan Steenkamp, CEO of OpenTV. "OpenTV's solution is fully compatible with virtually any TV operator and hardware vendor, which means we offer not only freedom and flexibility for the TV operator, but also the best proven technology. We are pleased to announce Image Wireless Communications as our first Canadian deployment. "

Kim South, Vice President and CEO of Image Wireless Communications, commented, "We're excited about the addition of OpenTV's platform for interactive services. Convergence in our industry requires us to always be looking for ways to differentiate ourselves from our competitors. OpenTV provides us with the means and flexibility to stay a step ahead of the competition through the addition of value-added and revenue-producing services."

SAGEM is supplying the digital MMDS receivers which include NagraVision's conditional access technology. As part of the agreement, OpenTV will provide the head-end solution software, OpenStreamer(TM), to interface with [ Harmonic Inc. ] 's MPEG-2 Multiplexers using standard DVB ASI interface.

Image Wireless Communications has already begun field testing the complete system and plans to launch digital pay television services by the end of the summer, with interactive services deployed before year's end.
