Several things caught my eye concerning this.

First, it mentions digital (!!!) TV and compression technology. If I'm not mistaken STB's products were analog-based TV signal converters so I don't see the same overlap that you and Sun have noted.

Two, its a "foremost supplier of leading-edge, high performance PC graphics processors." To me, this indicates Nvidia or 3dfx.

Three, the Voodoo3 3500TV has been delayed for two months ... what has 3dfx been doing that justified a such a delay since it was nearly ready back in January when the companies were talking about the merger? I have a hard time believing it is a yield problem. Could it possibly be a surprise inclusion of DSP core? (Probably not but...)

Four, Zoran's IP include digital AUDIO integrated core circuitry. If 3dfx is serious about competing in the board making arena for the longer term, it will need an integrated sound/graphics/TV board by mid-to-late next year. Regardless of the PC add-in board aspect, what about the possibility of an integrated set-top box chip or game consol? Currently, 3dfx/STB has no audio product or technology to integrate.

Five, since 3dfx/STB already plays in the MPEG decoder field, it is much more likely, it already has some sort of business dealings with Zoran. Is STB's MPEG software self-developed or did they incorporate some one else's (ie Zoran's)?

Am I way off base here?

BTW Several of the above reasons seem to eliminate Nvidia unless it is abandoning its current business model.
