Would it be helpful to ask that you guys take a look at some dictionary definitions? I think the "external authority" element is just not in the definion of both ethics and morals, although certainly it can be added. I am not going to presume that any definition I find is the best one, I do like the Oxford English Dictionary but it's not on-line.

I have a tough time accepting a moral code because someone recommended it - even if that someone is intelligent, thoughtful, a nice guy and has obviously been touched by something Cool. I appreciate the compliments, but I wouldn't want anybody to accept a moral code on my say so. I'm regretting discussing my situation not because I am concerned about the discussion of it or that anybody may think me strange, but simply because some things are beyond the written word, and anything I write, however careful I am, is both incomplete and misleading. As to your specific questions, I have found many books that have part of the truth (or Truth if you prefer), none that has the whole truth, many that are helpful to my search (my experiences -- note plural -- are not complete one-time incidents but part of an experiential process interspersed with very special moments of experience of/communication with the divine, and I told you words just don't cut it). It really is like trying to explain a Mozart symphony to somebody who has been profoundly deaf from birth. Try to write an essay explaining the power of music to someone who has never heard a single sound in their lives, and see how far you get! <g>
