Being up-to-date with modern cleanroom concepts, you will be aware that probably the best proposals for future fabs have wafers sealed from the outside environment in mini- and micro-environments. This will hopefully mean that operators will have to wear nothing more than white coats and cleanroom shoes in a class 1000 environment.

No-one is that far yet, but I quote from an article on the Dresden fab

"Because Fab 30 is new, it could make maximum use of SMIF pod automation. Much of the fab can operate with a less-expensive Class 100 cleanroom environment since the wafers are contained in a protected pod, Saltich said."
