Hi Herc, sorry, but I'm not familiar with Net Medic, perhaps others here are. I'd drop a line to them by email at their web site, and present the question, tho. Or perhaps someone else here can assist you.

A couple of questions. Are you also receiving voice service over your ADSL line, and if so, how is it? Also, just curious if you received this service recently, and whether you are in the Atlanta section now being covered by BLS's new FTTC architecture. Finally, whose ADSL modem (what brand) did the telco install in your instance? Thanks.

Regards, Frank Coluccio

I can't get Net Medic to assess my ADSL speeds.

I wonder if the program's ability to assess speed depends on the modem. I have ADSL service from USWest. It uses a Cisco 675 router in bridging mode for the service. I've been using NetMedic since it was mentioned on this thread a couple of days ago and have found it does a good job of reporting speeds on my system. I didn't have to do anything to set it up for ADSL other than make sure NetMedic is running before opening the first browser window.

On its various screens, NetMedic detects uswest.net (my DSL ISP) as "intranet", and alter.net (uswest.net's primary backbone provider) as the ISP. After accessing a few web sites it identifies the "speed limit" of my system as either 256 kbps (which is what I pay for) or 1.5 mbps.

And responding to two of Frank C's subsequent questions: I use just one line for both voice and DSL. I notice a slight whine in the voice line that wasn't there before. It's not bad enough to bother me and I barely notice it anymore, but I'm not sure I'd want to deal with it if I used the phone for hours at a time. I also had to get rid of one handset that was much noisier than the others. I no longer hear a click on the line when someone else is being interrupted by call waiting. The click on my line for call-waiting seems to have become louder.

Hello Herc,

Can you tell me the exact make/model of the ADSL modem that you are using ... I need the model number ... I'll check to see if I can find you an app that will provide the information ... or maybe even write one! ;-)

Also, what operating system are you running? I'm going to guess Windows95? Or 98? This is also important.

Part of the reason that these apps might not work is the stat counters that you need to have for tracking bytes of data in and out on the ethernet port ...

If you get me these answers I'm interested in seeing what I can do ...

Scott C. Lemon

About ADSL and NetMedic

Herc,

Just in case others run into this problem, I will post this on thread. When viewing the NetMedic Dashboard, click on the "View" menu. Select "Summaries" and verify that all four items are checked. Next position the mouse cursor over the pane that reads "SPEED LIMIT". While holding down the right mouse button, select the "Speed Limit" menu item and verify that the LAN option is selected. This should correct your problem.
