In view of this information, are there any comments from this international thread on the fact that it was actually the former German foreign minister H.D. Genscher who first officialised the break-up of Yugoslavia by starting diplomatic exchange with Slovenia and Croatia long time ago in his time.
In my recollection things went like this: Both nowadays states claimed independence, no answer from anybody internationally for quite some time (maybe several weeks?), again news about independence claims, then Genscher sends diplomats, and only now, slowly, reluctantly, other Western Countrys followed up.
Was this well-done? Why did this person vanish so fast from politics after that?

MNI.

The main reason that they were about the only friend that we had in the Balkans was that the Germans recruited others in Yugoslavia and the surrounding area based on anti- Serbian sentiment, since the Serbs dominated the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and had expansionist aspirations. To put it another way, it isn't so much that the other nationalities were pro- German, as that they were anti- Serb. The Ustashe, it is true, were pretty vicious, though...Anyway, they threw in the towel because they pretty much got a deal that they could live with. Had it been a matter of national survival, I am sure it would have been different...Besides, now they have a bunch of people to shoot at if there is another crisis...

<<Funny how times have changed.>>

John, very good comment. Yes. Serbs are very brave, steel-like nation, and NATO underestimates them for sure. This war far from over. The minute when US/NATO troops leave, the ethnic conflict will start again. If US/NATO really prepare to start a ground invasion, I am sure Serbs will fight them the way they fought Hitlers. No doubt about that.
