I agree with your assumptions about the systems, I know this only by hearsay. However, if the ASTN system is concerned with a few large trades rather than thousands of small trades it may be that UNIX is not superior in this scenario. I think that NT 5.0 will be adequate to handle the traffic. I'll be the first to admit I am not an IT person. For that matter, if I want to build a fence, I am not a "hammer" person. My preference is to select the right tool for the job.

I think the ASTNteam has a little background in all the available platforms they could use. I hope they chose the right tool for the job.
