i paid $150 usd for my USB Compactflash reader. Performance is okay but nothing to get excited about.

I have never tried a SCSI reader but I can tell you that performance would be at least an order of magnitude greater than a USB reader. Readers with a SCSI interface command much higher prices than do USB or Parallel-port versions. It is a much more common interface, no special drivers needed, and much higher performance.
