John,

You keep oversimplifying the facts: Strange that the Serbs get the blame for the breakup and subsequent civil war in Yugoslavia when they were the ones who wanted to remain a unified, multicultural nation.

The problem is your notion of an ideal ''multicultural society''. The South African apartheid was also a ''multicultural model'', as today's Brazil is another.... Yet, I don't think that any of them would fit in with Albanians' vision of a FAIR, DEMOCRATIC multicultural fabric.

You see, John, second-class citizenship is no longer in fashion or else, you should petition for the U.S.A. to come back under the yoke of Her Gracious Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and Ireland. Of course, the US, as a new docile colony of Great Britain would agree to indemnify the UK for the Boston Tea Party spoilage...

Now, if you consider the American Revolution of 1777 as a democratic progress for the American people, don't deny other peoples emancipation.

I oppose mentioning multiculturality in respect of the former Yugoslav system. That society was segregated, with apartheid less visible than in former South Africa, but as well established and consistent. It needed strong binding forces to persist.
But now tell me (although you did it, alright, for months): if you blame Western leaders what is in view their fault.
Plain naivite ? Hidden plans? With which objective?

Still my question on the earliest motives behind Mr.Genscher's act, and, was it a surprise or not, should be regarded open for discussion.

Regards MNI

Germany in particular encouraged the Croats to separate without any guarantees as to treatment of minorities, etc. A nation based on race should not be so encouraged. We have the same thing with Quebec nationalists, who, when they speak of 'Quebecers' mean those of French origin - completely ignoring the history and rights of others who have lived there for generations. And the rights of those who are newcomers too - but are not French. d

<<I have been telling people on this newsgroup
for months that it was not Slobodon Milosevic who
caused this civil war but rather, it was Western
European nations like Germany and Italy that secretly
encouraged Slovania and Croatia to try and break away.>>

John, you are so right. However, there is nothing new about this. Western countries, including the US, have done this ever since 19th century, and they will continue to do it well into the future. This is also their policy toward China, Taiwan, and Tibet. Britain wants Tibet for so many years so badly, and they cannot get it. I only hope they understand that China is not the 19-century China any more, if the US and NATO dare to try to do to China what they did in Yugoslavia, they will get they deserved.

When Slob saw that sucking up to Serb racism would gain him power he began to enact authoritarian, overbearing restrictions on non Serbs throughout Yugoslavia. The writing was on the wall for Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Kosovo. Either get out from under Slob Milosevic's racist Serb government or suffer.

It's very convenient for you to leave out important factors like that. I wonder what could benefit a person like you to distort the issues?

You would probably want to stay in a country where your rights and job and home and security were being threatened, happy and unaware.
