LG Electronics has begun shipping the world's first transmission chips for digital television to the United States ahead of countries like Japan.

LG officials said yesterday the chips are priced at more than six times that of 64 megabit dynamic random access memory chips and hints at the huge potential of the non-memory sector for Korean companies.

They said the chips meet all the requirements of the Advanced TV Systems Committee of the United States and make it possible for consumers to view digital level transmission without investing in a digital television set.

LG officials said the chips are being shipped to Hauppauge Computer Works in the price range of $30 and that the demands for the chips are expected to continue to increase.

LG has already been successful in the development of chip sets for digital and high definition television and the first units have been developed and exported to countries like Japan for the first time.
