Don't believe everything you read on a SmartMedia website. The numbers there will prove to be incorrect. SmartMedia has a lot of problems including backward incompatibility (no on-board controller) and lack of a serialization feature (needed for copyright protection). Also, most digital camera manufacturers put scripting software on the SmartMedia card which is specific to the camera. If the card is inserted into a different device this scripting is removed by the formatting process rendering the card useless. If you don't believe me read the second article on your own post.

I can say confidently that CompactFlash is the de facto standard while SmartMedia sales are being artificially propped up by Fuji Film and Olympus' unflagging dedication to Toshiba.
