Ausdauer, you've done a good job of summarizing the state of the industry regarding flash memory cards. Personally, I agree with you that Compact Flash has many advantages over Smart Media. It would be cool to put a wireless modem card in your digital camera and upload your photos straight to the Web. Or to put an IBM Microdrive in your MP3 player or camera (instead of flash memory).

However, I only agree that Compact Flash is a "de facto standard" for multi-function slots. For cost reasons, it seems quite possible that single-function devices that only need a memory slot (simple cameras etc.) will keep using Smart Media.

I did find some more recent data for flash media preference in digital cameras - 48% for Smart Media and 34% for Compact Flash. I would be interested to see the data on which you are basing your opinion that the numbers "will prove to be incorrect".
