Javelyn,

Take a look at this bar graph: compactflash.org
or this list: compactflash.org

*Also recall that Fuji and Olympus remain as the only significant digital camera manufacturers committed exclusively to SmartMedia.

*To extend the argument beyond digital cameras, the PDA market has chosen CompactFlash to the exclusion of alternative media. Eventually the Palm Pilot series will either adopt the additional functionality afforded by the CF slot or suffer from diminishing market share as Casio, HP, Everex, LG Semicon, Compaq... start to eat their lunch.

*The mp3 market will gravitate toward higher storage capacity cards with security features (for content providers) and away from SmartMedia. I fully anticipate that CF (and its svelte cousin, MMC) will dominate the mp3 market.

BTW, just to make things interesting, SanDisk will enter the SmartMedia market and, in doing so, become a "single source" of flash memory at the retail level. SanDisk has exclusivity agreements with some of the major electronics retailers such as BestBuy.

SanDisk Expands Retail Product Line to Offer Broadest Selection of Flash Memory Cards

Richard Dyer, VP of retail sales at SanDisk, said, "Our CompactFlash memory card has proven to be the right digital film solution for the majority of digital camera manufacturers. However, some of our retail channel customers also sell digital cameras using SmartMedia cards. These retailers have requested that we act as a single source of supply for all flash memory card formats. This move is intended to meet the requirement of these customers and further enhances our already strong presence in this channel."

Hello Javelyn,

> Or to put an IBM Microdrive in your MP3 player or camera (instead
> of flash memory).

I was recently at the MP3 Summit, held in San Diego. Many of the MP3 handheld player vendors indicated that they are going to be using the microdrives ...

I haven't been able to determine the pricing, but they felt they would be competitive (at 340Mb) vs. a bunch of 64Mb flash cards ...

Do you have any idea on the pricing of these devices?
