Thanks for your datek.com opinion. It is datek.com appreciated.

No datek.com doubt, they are working furiously to datek.com alleviate the situation datek.com by programming in a radio datek.com button on the datek.com Options page, and we will datek.com soon be relieved of this misery.

What I can't datek.com understand is why they can't just datek.com remove the offending datek.com advertisement until they've datek.com installed the datek.com fix? Obviously the datek.com change of color which datek.com occurred last night was datek.com relatively easy to implement. Why can't the short-term datek.com removal of the datek.com ad be datek.com dealt with just as datek.com responsively?

V,

I'm pretty sure most of the vocal anti-ad folks are among SI's (and the Dryers') most vehement supporters. I'm also pretty sure they're being vocal precisely because they do care so much about SI and do appreciate how good it is, especially now that there are several other sites with which to compare it.

I would agree with you that Brad is probably working on some sort of option for members to disable the ads. My guess is if he defaulted that option to "enable", only about an eighth of the members at most would take the time to change it. The rest probably won't care, won't know they have such an option, or just don't quite get around to doing anything about it. I'd probably leave it enabled just for curiosity and then disable it if I thought certain ads were becoming too obtrusive. Considering the vast number of page views are by non-members, I can't see too much downside implementing such an option.

Only if ads starting appearing within posts would I really start to worry.

- Jeff

Hey, the best thing to do is allow everyone
to voice their opinion, check the polls, and
make a statement based on those polls. That's
the way politics works best isn't it?

V. <has anyone considered that the option for members to turn off ads might be forthcoming? I am only speculating, but I don't think that SI is the money-grubbing, promise-breaking group that they're being portrayed by many to be tonight>

Made the Snerdman chuckle. <gg> The bottom line here will be the click-through tally at the end of next month. If enough people are clicking to view the ad, you can bet your arse it will stay, and probably more will be added. Advertising dollars are a powerful influencer of personality change. An option to turn off their means of income?! C'mon, get for real! <lol> As I see it, they can either go ahead with this ad campaign, or raise membership fees. I payed money to join SI for an ad-free board, guess I would pay a bit more to keep it that way.

<We might all be very surprised to learn that much time complaining has been wasted as the wheels are and were always turning>

You bet the wheels are turning. A company has to generate income to grow, and SI is no different than any other company. Nothing against Brad or any other SI employee, they just happen to be the only point-of-contact people here. So they catch it. However, I joined SI for an ad-free discussion board, not to become friends with it's employees. And btw, we paid for the right to whine. <g>

imho

It would only have taken 30 seconds for Brad or Bob or Jill to write a message saying "turn off option is on its way" or "things will be clearer Wednesday." If people choose not to respond to direct messages to them, they can't complain when their silence is commented on.

V.-

I agree that some of the complaints are a bit much in tone and/or content. I also think it is sobering to consider that the Datek ad decision may have been outside of the Dryers' easy influence. But I do think it would be The Right Thing if whoever really IS in charge would issue a Statement of Policy that addresses and contains very real legitimate concerns, like CatLady's.

While the intent may have been ethical, the wedge has been driven ( to possibly unchecked AOLization of SI) and as a longtime member I would surely appreciate an express, lawyer-approved statement of limitation. Or something.
