Paul Allen's investing record has been mixed. Many winners, but some losers too.

Datek took in about $300 million from VC funds like TA Associates and Allen. This allowed them to stay afloat (they've been having legal problems), give them cash to compete marketing wise with E*Trade and Ameritrade, and also stay private (no IPO needed yet).

I actually DON'T LIKE Datek, their record is pretty pitiful in terms of customer service and ethics. But business is business.
