Iomega to Brand a CD-RW drive

This is what Jodie is going to announce at PC Expo:

Because the compact disc is so firmly a part of consumer life,
Zip-drive maker Iomega this week will enter the market with the ZipCD,
its first CD-RW product, through a partnership with Philips Electronics NV.

The ZipCD, a 4X-write/rewrite and 24X-read drive, is designed to
complement Iomega's existing 100-Mbyte Zip floppy drive, said Jon Robison, worldwide director of product management and
marketing for Iomega's optical business in Longmont, Colo.

Although the ZipCD initially will target retailers, priced at about
$300, Iomega will sell the drive to OEMs as well.

Look like Iomega is buying Philips CD-RW drives and slapping an Iomega label on them. Well, at least this drive (24x4x4 speed) is more up to the times than Nomai/Iomega's stillborne (6x2x2). So much for the Iomaniac-vaunted "Nomai CD technology." That one never got out of the starting gate.

Iomega, welocome to the wonderful world of pure-commmodity storage. Enjoy your new life. Iomega fanatics now have the opportunity to buy low-margin products and still have the Iomega label on them.

Iomega has now officially switched to Survival-mode. Look for a stock price that represents this new era- a price nearer to IOM's $1.40 Book Value.
