Sorry, but that just won't wash. Governments, by and large, are at worst evil, and at best oppressive. But when religions ally with governments to promote a religious agenda, then, my friend, then we truly see cruelty and evil in action.

The USSR wasn't truly Atheist. It was Secular Humanist, which is imho dropping a new religion in place of the old one (for most that was Russian Orthodox Christianity). Folks in this country liked to misrepresent Russia as officially Atheist. So the massacres in the USSR weren't any better or worse than earlier ones in Spain or Mexico or North Africa. Fwiw
