Talk about speeds. I guess the BB speeds are now ushering in the new ads. I just saw a new type of banner.
I was just checking a Ebay article at this site:

news.com

You might not get the same ad I got. It is a banner ad by IBM (e-commerce) and it has sound as well as photos, etc. As your mouse passes over any part of the ad, the ad talks to you, displays pictures, etc. Different parts of the ad have different voice/pic presentations.

I never thought about it, but your mouse generally wanders all over a page as you sit there reading a article. It will naturally pass over the ad at some point and then you get surprised as the ad starts talking to you and putting on a show.

There is something extremely screwy about SI that is far more complex than page size or server speed.
Sometimes it can take 30 seconds to start loading a post. Sometimes it will load a little and then pause for 15 seconds.

This happens to me regardless of what ISP I use or what time of day, and it happens *only* on SI. The fact that some people dont have any problems with SI implies that it is something in how SI connects to the network or how it routes. Beyond me really.

This does point out an issue yet again that I have always wondered about @home. I have a 48k modem link and with NetMedic I can tell that very often even over such a skinny pipe the "last mile" is *not* the primary limiter. Faster connnections with all else equal would do me little good. The primary culprit I suspect is traffic within the ISP itself, though it could also be the "internet" as the source. I actually have good reason to doubt that the server of the web site is the cause despite the fact that is what people blame the most.

Eric

RTev,

Have you done any uploading?

Pulled this off the cable modem newsgroup. I would think this could become an issue for @Home, I don't like it that I'm being punished for some idiots running web servers. Go after them not me!

Check out whizcomp1.webjump.com and read the memo that was
sent to all MSOs regarding the bandwidth caps. Pay close attention to how
they repeatedly make excuses and tell their representatives to NOT speak of
the cap to customers unless absolutely necessary. Customers should be
informed of this limitation before purchasing service. It is horrible that
they are treating us this way. Do they even realize that the download
speeds get limited to 16k/s while uploading? Well, surprise @home.. your
"ONAdvantage" strategy at keeping the downlink speeds "blazingly fast" by
limiting abusers DOESNT WORK. I tried sending an email attachment this
morning of a powerpoint slideshow. While it was slowly uploading, I figured
I'd "surf" the web a bit.... too bad it took nearly 4 minutes just to load
the custom @Home "www" page.

Check that site out... make as many people as you can aware of this.

If @Home 1) Was honest about this, and 2) Implemented a MUCH more logical
'abuse protection' scheme (uhm for starters that would include NOT limiting
DOWNSTREAM while uploading.. another may be some sort of dynamic upstream
limit based on overall system usage -- if the node is relatively inactive,
why not let my powerpoint slideshow fly to the server as quickly as it
should?)

Once again, whizcomp1.webjump.com .. the memo is off one of
the links. Special thanks to CD for somehow obtaining the memo and hosting
this website.
