A couple of observations from today's show. Someone late in the show wondered what to do since she was getting locked out of making 401k changes for many months due to Y2K issues. Bob said well in the event of a sell signal she could hedge personal money short against the 401k but when she noted she didn't have cash to do that he said there are some situations that are just not going to be amenable to a timing model. If it were me I would just move a lot to cash or something and be conservative since there would not be tax consequences. He also a few times spoke of a possible change of outlook in terms of the weeks and months ahead which I think has been pretty clear to anyone listening closely lately. He also gave two possible scenarios for the sell signal; 1) final stages of topping occurs within about 5% range of the sell signal with the topping lasting perhaps as long as 2-3 months, or 2) Bear starts shortly after a bear call. He also noted the reason he is out with a bear signal is he would then see a possible 5% to the upside and a 20%-40% or more possible downside. When talking of the possible bear he seemed to feel the way I've come to view it i.e. as an event he would be very happy about, assumedly cleaning out all the excesses and providing a healthy new start at the bottom. Not what he said explicitly necessarily but what
I gathered what he was saying implicitly. I would also think successfully calling a bear would also be a great personal triumph. I think this Ultrabear and Ultra OTC short are great ways to hedge and/or make money in a bear without tying up an inordinate amount of funds and the accounting in my account stays a lot cleaner than when I shorted SPYders in the past and got this lump of cash mixed in with the cash in my account confusing me as to my position.
