"The alternative - a stand alone site - will need to rely exclusively on advertising"
Actually, a site such as SI would rely on ads, membership fees, fees for IQC, etc.

"and that is a risky proposition because many online ad spaces go unsold currently".
Have you called go2net lately to run an ad on SI ?...my understanding from sources is that SI is constantly the first site under the go2net umbrella to sell out it's ad space.

I understand your point Michelle, and I agree that if datek is to become part of go2net and paul's wired world that it should be supported with links from the go2net, stocksite, and SI homepages, but not on a paying member's personal thread browsing page BECAUSE IT SERVES NO PRACTICAL, FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE FOR THE MEMBERS. They said no ads or ability to turn off ads for members and this is an unremovable ad, plain and simple.
Hey GNET gang - how about a link to a USEFUL site that will soon become part of go2net like IQC. Hell, they don't even have a link to Stocksite on the member's page.
I'd like to see how much additional revenue this datek link is bringing in to help us save SI from bankruptcy.

Humbly, brk
