Not only a loss of respect, but almost reveling in it.

Indeed, the posts of one person were so offensive to me that I am no longer reading his posts nor posting to him. I did receive numerous intelligent, thoughtful posts from others, which I deeply enjoyed.

It is not a sense of loss of respect it IS loss of respect. I cannot respect or esteem or hold in high regard people who have ideas that are cuckoo (imo). I just can't. I don't respect people who believe in aliens, I don't respect people who think the mission to the the moon was a hoax, and I do not respect people who try to say that faith is fact. I can respect people who are faithful and who say that faith is impossible to rationally explain- I can respect the logic of that.
I do not expect people whom I do not respect to respect me. In fact it would be an honor not to be respected by people whom I cannot esteem. If they respected me I would be bound to be doing something illogical.

Respect should not be freely given it should be won. All this talk nowadays about showing everyone respect - cheapens respect. Respect is for what is WORTHY of respect- clearly we will all have a different standard. Mine is pretty high- you have to make sense (for a majority of the time) in order to be respected by me.

Edwarda, I don't know if the acrimonious mood of last weekend is totally gone or not, because I have not had time to catch up with all the posts. I would like to say, however, that having read X's posts on the idea of respect, and yours mourning the momentary loss of friendliness around here, I tend to agree with X. Just patching up and spackling over instances of egregious conduct because it is more pleasant and less disturbing when everyone gets along bothers me somehow in the same way that praising children CONSTANTLY, whether their effort is meritorious or sadly lacking, does. It is like nothing is as meaningful as it should be.

This is NOT the Mr. Rogers show, and I find it boring when it feels that way around here, and I for one would like to weigh in as urging honest and open discourse, even when disagreements take place. And I would also like to say that I find X refreshing, and usually logical and objective, even when she is occasionally wrong, as we all are sometimes. So, out with the saccharine, and in with authenticity, or something like that!
