$20K - is that just tuition or the entirety of the wax ball?

My son chose private. And unfortunately he did it in a year when I had to take some fairly significant capital gains to diversify, so while we were no wealthier than before (indeed, less wealthy considering the tax bite) it all got reported as income, and if I had asked for financial aid they would have fallen off their chairs laughing. Also unfortuately, he was not the student to get academic scholarships. So we are paying the full bite for one of the more expensive colleges on the West coast. Which would be worth it if he decided to major in something other than girls and sports! <g> But then, coming from a small island where everything he did got back to us before he did, and with very minimal options (one movie theater, built back in the 40s and showing its age), he found the freedom and options of the city heady.

Still, he survived the year, and I hope got the worst out of his system! <g>

The girls have chosen public (out of state, but getting a semi-resident tuition through an inter-state tuition reduction agreement) and they are getting partial academic scholarships for their 4.0 averages, so it won't be too bad. But they had a free choice to choose public or private and decided that this was the best college for them (has an EXCELLENT program in elementary education, which is their present goal), so I don't feel they sacrificed anything.
