I have written about portals vs. search engines before. It is my opinion as users get more web savvy they will use portals less and search engines more. Portals give clueless newbies a place to start, but as they progress they learn that the web can be used for all their questions in life (well, almost anyway) - and search engines are the quick and easy way of getting the answers. In other words, I would take AV any day over Lycos. Even thinking about changing AV into a portal defeats it raison d'etre. Just my 5c of course, usual disclaimers apply.
