How many shares would Vinik have had to have bought by now to implement this squeeze?

I, too, am an honored Beta tester....

this Vinik story worries me. He will have an exit strategy which will not coincide with most of ours. What goes up could go down, and for the wrong reasons.

Yes, but that is not a good sign, because Vinik is a raider and he has done these things in the past (like MU) when he was ready to bail out. If he loaned out let say a million shares to the shorts (1/6 off the total short position), that would be enough to start the run, the rest of the short (the word spread rapidly there) may create the stampede. Often, however, that is replaced by a new crop of shorters at a higher prices.
