Re: why would a ceo mention it in a national interview..

Why not?

Re: no manufacturer who uses bto, such as the auto industry "refurbishes" at a factory level...it is always done third party, in the auto instance, by the dealer.....

Dell can't farm this out without sacrificing dollars. Period.
They can do it much cheaper themselves. They would have to hire
and equivalent workforce to guide the third party. Furthermore,
the system still has Dell's name on it. Would you put your
name on systems refurbished by a third party. Quality is not
sacraficed, more dollars in the coffers.

Re: so who will buy these auctioned units, what quantities, what prices???

Mostly individuals and SOHO customers. They will pay whatever the
market will bear which will be less than new.

Re: where are the new servers, storage, appliance, visions????

What new vision do you want? Look at an Intel roadmap to see
what's coming in terms of technology. 8way servers won't have
high penetration until the arrival of the Profusion chipset.
As far as appliances, what segment exists today? There is none.

Re: and i ask of you...what service???? they have none...ibm has, cpq has, hwp has, perot has,eds has, unisys has, wang has,fujitsu/siemens wants to challenge ibm..........and dell contracts out...

Now I beginning to sense you don't have any understanding of which
services Dell offers and which ones they don't. "Concrete" plans
aside, Dell gains global coverage utilizing NEC, Wang, Unisys, BancTec and Decision1. In addition to basic 4hr onsite service
and warranty support, Dell offers services strategically linked to selling product. Network consulting, custom integration, performance tuning, maintenance, procurement, leasing, disposal, installation,
standardization and transition management, 24/7 global helpdesk,
paperless PO, online diagnostics, asset tagging, mass customization
through Dell Plus, parts programs etc...

And the beauty to the customer is, this stuff is mostly included
in the price of the purchase. That is, service for Dell is
not currently a profit center!

The areas of opportunity lie in ERP, eBusiness consulting, extranets,
application development, a myriad of outsourcing tasks.

If you do business with Dell today, you have access to every service under the sun because Dell partners with NEC, Wang, Unisys etc. who
profit from these extra activities, not Dell.

That's where a lot of opportunity lies for Dell. But to the customer,
it's transparent.

The immediate areas of opportunity appear to be in consulting beyond
hardware implementation.
