June 23, 1999 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is set to pour US$1.2 billion into its LSI system division by 2001 in the hope of pulling in US$2.5 billion in sales a year.

At a press conference during the 1999 PC EXPO at Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City, Chin Dae-je, executive vice president and CEO of Samsung Electronics' System LSI division, said, Samsung will reshape its non-memory business division with CPU, ASIC and multimedia products.

"Our primary products, including custom-made semiconductors, Alpha CPUs, MCUs, mobile phones, multimedia and networking products, will represent 80 percent of our total output, up from the current 40 percent," Chin said.

He added that Samsung plans to focus on digital TVs, MP3 players, DVDs and IMT-2000 goods.

With part of the US$1.2 billion capital investment, Samsung is set to push ahead with completing development of 0.18-micron design rule technology in the third quarter of 1999.
