You are probably right, but not because of the AV acquisition. The market simply sucks these days.

Nonwithstanding the discussion we (Scarecrow and myself) have already had re search engines vs portals, both are in fact fairly easy to create. The difference is brand name, where I believe that AV has one of the most recognized brand names on the web, more than most portals although not quite at Yahoo level.

Whether they change AV into a portal or keep it as a dedicated search engine, they instantly have a lot of eyeballs - which is what counts in this business.

I hope they will keep it as a search engine though, as there are dozens of portals out there but only one AltaVista Search Engine (the one and only true... ;-)

(post edit) I just had a look at Altavista again (Yes, I know I use it several times daily, but I don't actually *look* at what's on the front page :-) and it seems like it already has quite a lot of "portal stuff" on it: news, categories, etc.

I still think it's not generally perceived as a portal though. I certainly don't (but then again, I might be wrong, wouldn't be the first time)
