I don't think that it is any reason to attack SI. it's not an attack. it's a defense of what we thought SI was.It is, as I said, an intrusion, and I hope that the reaction serves to reinforce for management the importance of this issue to readers. what a load of crap. WHAT REACTION?!?! A handful of posters have objected and continue to protest. The majority of SI posters apparently don't care. With all due respect to my fellow protestors, none of the really well known SI 'darlings' have protested. They have all either remained silent or become outright apologists for SI. I don't know what makes me angrier, being lied to by SI on this issue or the Quislings who try to explain it away. If we had a little more reader anger on this issue then maybe we could have gotten a message to SI and had a hope that the Datek ad would be the end of it. , it is a small square of color with a link, it is built in, it blends. SO EFFING WHAT!!! The size of the ad is irrelevant. If they had been upfront and told us there would eventually be ads it would not be an issue. But as has been posted here several times Brad said we would no be bombarded with ads or there would be a kill switch for those who objected. Now some would like to take their Clinton legal dictionaries and say that Brad's statement meant this or that but the presence of this Datek ad on every post and the lack of a kill switch are clearly against the spirit of that post. No amount of legalistic, linguistic gymnastics can change that. Many of us joined SI because it was a community. And by joining I do not mean paying dues, I mean joining by making a commitment of time, energy and emotion to contribute to the intellectual content of the site. SI management sold itself as sharing this feeling. The Datek ad violates that spirit. To me this is no different than having a telemarketer calling me every time I'm having a conversation with a friend. And SI is not above trying to take advantage of this community spirit. They are currently asking members to act as unpaid beta testers to advance their commercial venture. We do the work, they'll make the money. In the past I would have been more than happy to volunteer to help the Dryers with beta testing the software. With the advent of the Datek spam I have zero interest.many of whom are very upset Very few of us are very upset. Before long we'll tire of the fighting this alone. Then we'll have to decide whether to hold our noses and live with it or do the honourable thing and follow Josef. But before long it will quiet down and be safe for more ads to be rolled out. I hear some of those animated ads can be quite entertaining.
