Last night was Diamond's big unveiling of their RioPort plans, likely conveniently launched after their announcement with S3. I was hoping maybe we'd hear some "EDigital" or "Lucent" but unfortunately nothing I have so far read mentions them. Intertrust is mentioned though. The primary press release is at the following address: biz.yahoo.com Yet, it is possible that they wouldn't have mentioned Lucent or EDigital anyhow. IMHO, it appears that Lucent is keeping a tight leash on its OEM plans and would likely not have allowed DIMD to make an announcement regarding Lucent. This paragraph may be the shining light: "The company intends to offer a range of Rio-brand player designs. Today, RioPort announced a new 64MB Rio 500 model, which will be sold at retail by Diamond Multimedia. Other, multi-codec, high capacity designs are in development for delivery later this year." Sure sounds like a Lucent time line to me although arguably "later this year" is typical form of any company that has plans for the future. A separate release does expand a little upon their general future plans but it is arguably independent and does not restrict the former general comments regarding "multi-codec": (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/990624/ca_rioport_11.html ) "RioPort, Inc. is also working on a line of new high capacity Rio devices that will feature, among other things, support for Microsoft's Windows Media format, voice recording capability and a USB docking station for fast charging. Two models will be bundled with IBM's ultra-high capacity MicroDrives for up to 340MB of digital audio storage. Additional details of the future Rio designs will be available closer to the next-generation product line's expected release in the Fall of 1999." Ding, ding, ding....could we have a winner? Voice recording capability, IBM's MicroDrive and more codecs (the just announced version actually supports more than just MP3) and DIMD's apparent admission they are working with Lucent. In sum, I don't think many EDIG holders would have complained about an announcement by DIMD including EDIG. None the less, given Lucent's apparent interest in keeping potential OEM's silent, it doesn't really come as a surprise. Although the statements on their future products are broad and could easily refer to a number of things, they certainly create some hope and indication that indeed EDIG may get its hands on DIMD's RioPlayer in the near future.
