Burt - RE: "AMD's future as an independent company depends on 4 things:
1) K7 yields on the .25 process"

We've been "told" that is doing fine

"2) K7 yields on the .18 process"

People have been saying Dresden with the new copper process is a risky move

"3) Boxmaker adoption rate for the K7"

While we know that some OEMs will use the Athlon, we still don't know how many models they will have and whether or not they will try to test it first, because after all, it is a high end AMD chip, something no one has ever seen.

"4) Intel pricing on the Coppermine and 600 MHz PIII."

According to the Firing Squad pricing roadmap firingsquad.com ,

When the Athlon comes out the PIII 600 will cost $824 vs. $699 for the Athlon 600. But Athlon motherboards will cost more initially so that will offset some of the cost.

When the Camino platform does come out, those RDRAM enabled motherboards will also cost a lot. So against CuLatermine, the Athlon will be quite competitive price-wise. Performance-wise, FPU stuff will be faster, but with business app, it may just be competitive.

Let me add a 5 to your list:

5) Third party ability to supply chipsets, motherboards, ...

All we know so far is when Via and Ali expect to release their Athlon chipsets. Nothing more, nothing less. As far as motherboards, we know who will make them, but nothing about availability.

I tend to agree with you except on item 4.

The bigger test will be on PIII 450/500 speed grades.

These will be the meat of the desktop market for Q4.

If Intel slashes these to $100 range then AMD is cooked and gone.

The big question is will they try to do this.

I suspect that Intel will sell every 600Mhz chip they make even at a higher price than AMD K7's at least thru end of the year.

Regards,

Kash
