With the recent stories that Earthlink (ELNK) and Gateway (GTW) are in merger discussions, it appears that the business of selling PCs is going to be merged with business of getting online. The idea is that when a customer buys a PC, he will also get access to the Web. We believe the next possible acquisition target will be Mindspring (MSPG). The story released by the company this morning gives credence to the rumors. The acquirer may be Dell Computer (DELL)! Does Dell have the dough to buy MSPG with a present market capitalization 2.5 billion? Well, presently, Dell Computer has 3 billion share outstanding. In a recent proxy statement, Dell computer has asked its shareholders for authorization to increase those shares to 7 billion. Surely, Dell is not going to split its stock at its present level. In a recent TV interview, Michael Dell announced his company's intention to get into the Internet business. At that time, it was believed that he was referring to opening an auction site for sale of the company's refurbished equipment. We still believe that Dell will do that, but buying someone similar to MSPG will give his company a source of revenue while pursuing a slice off of the Internet pie. Mindspring last traded at $78 1/2 while Dell closed at $38 5/16. (6/24/99) STOCKWINNERS
