Chaz: WCDMA Is independent of frequency, although it was developed with the ITU's wish to have all 3G systems in the 2GHz area. The only problem was the lack of foresight within the FCC that auctioned off PCS licenses in the 1.9GHz frequencies. So if the US was to follow the rest of the world you'd have to close down all the PCS operators. This is why cdma2000 was good for the cdmaOne operators as it could provide the 3G services within existing frequencies.

Also to provide 3G services you will need to have big enough blocks of spectrum. So the 800MHz operators with very little spectrum will have a hard time. A solution for the TDMA 800 Mhz based operators is EDGE lite to offer a couple of hundred kbps rather that the IMT-2000 stipulated 384 kbps.

Wasn't the TDD mode the one that Alcatel and Siemens were trying to push originally? Ideal for pico cell structure? Anyone shed light on that?

Chaz - Now, could you shed some light on TDD mode which may emerge as the third part of 3rd gen along with CDMA2000 and WCDMA? And will this be entirely in new spectrum - and if so what configuration? Or is it still too early and info not available?

I've only seen passing references to the fact that the 3rd mode of CDMA3g will be a combination of the TDD modes of W-CDMA and CDMA-2000, so I can't really give a lot of details. My guess is that it is like W-CDMA - many of the details need to be worked out. As for the spectrum in which it will operate, that is one of the least important parameters in such a standard. It would be pretty straight forward to switch it to whatever frequency is best for the country of deployment. However, since it is less efficient than the other two modes I suspect it will primarily be used only where there are not two blocks adequately separated, and I would not expect it to be deployed in either the US or Europe.

Hope this helps.
