Charles,

Re: 1M volumes in Q3.

I think you are missing the 12 week production shift in your analysis.

Essentially the 300K units for Q3 are already in fab line.

The majority of Q4 volume of 1M or so will be in the line in Q3.

So yes I am sure that most of todays wafer starts are K7 now.

But those parts may barely show up in Q3.

Regards,

Kash

Re: "- Assume AMD produces 2-3Mu more K6s in Q3. Now, what do you think about how many K7s AMD can produce in Q3?"

Why do you think AMD ended up with excess slow K6x's when they could have stopped wafer starts when they saw the inventory building up? It's because they have to package them and test them at high temp before they know which ones are fast and which ones are slow. That means they have to package 5 K6's to sell 3 fast ones. 3 go to customers and 2 go on the shelf. If they are going to supply high speed K6's in Q3 they will build up more useless inventory. No way around it for AMD and their poor process control. So the only way to build K7 inventory is to cut WAY back on K6s. Expect another major disaster for Q3.

Chuck, why does AMD have an inventory of two million K6-2 parts? How fast are they, and why couldn't AMD sell them off as soon as they were hot off the line? You realize that every day that inventory loses value until sooner or later they become as cheap as popcorn parts.

Besides, AMD's own target is for hundreds of thousands of Athlons manufactured in Q3. What makes you think that AMD can even think about cranking out a million in Q3?

Charles - "AMD has over 2Mu K6s for Q3 needs."

Most likely what they are carrying over is low speed grades, virtually worthless.
