We aren't misunderstanding each other.

One can also say that one is "boxed" for the reverse order of what you indicated. ie: I'm short 1000 shares and buy 1000 shares to create a net position of zero but still have a borrow of 1000 shares available to me. In this example I'd be "boxed on 1000". If the stock trades higher, I can let them have the 1000 "boxed" shares without having to locate a new borrow. (But I still must sell it according to my net position, here as a short.) One might do this if it is anticipated that the borrow will be difficult to locate if the stock presented an new opportunity to short shares.
