Just saw this post on the Yahoo/Gtech board and thought everyone would be interested. (post #499): For Immediate Release May 18, 1999 INTERNATIONAL LOTTERY & TOTALIZATOR SYSTEMS ACCEPTS SETTLEMENT FROM RIVAL FIRM IN BID DISPUTE OVER ARIZONA LOTTERY CONTRACT CARLSBAD, CA - (May 18, 1999) - International Lottery & Totalizator Systems (ILTS) announced that it has accepted a settlement offer from a rival firm, GTECH Corp. in a bid protest filed by ILTS against the Arizona Lottery. ILTS President Mark Michalko said, "We continue to believe that our claims have merit. However, when GTECH raised the possibility of settlement, as a smaller company, we evaluated the expense of pursuing these claims both administratively and judicially. Given the amount of executive management's time and the significant legal expenses which would have to be incurred, our conclusion is that it was prudent to settle the case and avoid a protracted and expensive legal process." Added ILTS' Attorney Martin Galbut, "Given that some of our principal claims were that GTECH's proposal was not in compliance with certain mandatory requirements of the RFP, we will be carefully monitoring the Arizona Lottery's enforcement to ensure that GTECH fulfills all the requirements. Particularly in light of the extra cost to the State in selecting GTECH over ILTS, we fully expect that the Governor's office, the Legislature and Attorney General's office will also monitor both the Lottery and GTECH to ensure GTECH's compliance throughout the entire contract." - more -Lou Burns, ILTS' Director of Sales stated that, "GTECH was awarded the contract for online lottery equipment and services following what was supposed to be a fair, competitive bid process. With a company our size, there is always a concern that our bid is being solicited primarily for the purpose of having a multiple bid procurement; in essence, being used as a straw man.
