5-9's uptime/annum for any UNIX Server box is a load of crap ! Therefore the difference between the 5-9's and 3-9's is irrelevant. If you look large Servers environments with 100% uptime you'll see they are running true fault tolerant environments; Tandem and Mainframes. They tend not to dick around with UNIX hoping for 5-9's and getting 2-8's.

Maybe you missed the obvious point that 8-way x86 iron is here ... NT and Linux will begin displacing that expensive proprietary iron Sun boxes now ;)

It's obvious you have no real world experience with UNIX Server environments.

Based on a mild estimate of 4 hours downtime/week EBAY=97.6% uptime NOT including the 0.2% 24 hour hit they took the other day. They tend to take one of these major hits at least once a year; therefore true best case uptime is 97%.

The difference between 97% and 5-9's is exponential since each hour counts at that point. Maybe there is a (or many) Sun workstations out there sitting in a corner gather dust that have 5-9's uptime ?
