I spent a summer in Alabama during my youth reading Harlequins as they were the only only books about. They are dangerous and to be avoided.

I heard someone once refer to Harlequin Romances as "pornography for women". I dunno about that, but I bet it wouldn't be all that hard to churn them out. There's a formula you have to work within. The problem I'd have is that the stories would all descend into ribald jokes.
