Scumbria, Re: Do you think that Dirk Meyer, the architect of the world's fastest server microprocessor (the 21264), is now turning out junk for AMD?

Absolutely not. But Dirk Meyer's past record in turning out
marketable(or profitable) CPU is questionable.

Scumbria, HP now has the worlds fastest processor (fabed by Intel), not Alpha (also fabed by Intel).

No. I wouldn't call any of the current AMD chips, junk. However, it takes more than not producing junk to compete with the world's largest chipmaker.

I think the importance of supplier reliability is even more magnified on the high end and AMD's record speaks for itself, regardless of who is at the helm.

I think the strategy of competing with Intel on the high end is a very dangerous one for AMD. It's a make or break strategy and given the reliability record, the financial losses of this and previous quarters, the small number of fabs and the fact that AMD brand has been associated with low end products tilts the odds of success strongly against AMD, rendering it a poor investment in my opinion.

Does Meyer also head up AMD's process or manufacturing areas? Old saw in this industry: 'anybody can make just one.'

<Do you think that Dirk Meyer, the architect of the world's fastest server microprocessor (the 21264), is now turning out junk for AMD?>

Remember that the Alpha 21264 was a year late. Not only that, but it performed about 33% lower than previous expectations of 40 SpecInt and 60 SpecFP. (Initial parts scored 24 and 40, respectively. They can only go up from there, but it will be a while before the original targets will have been met.)
