Tad, I think the point raised about the Vantis sale was not whether it was a good idea but that the cash may be be burned up in only 9 months. What if Q3 is another bad quarter? When does AMD run out of $$$$?

Tad -

Thanks for your thoughts even though I never questioned the sale. At least now I know AMD got good money for Vantis.

RE: "Intel's stock performance for the quarter through last night is the third worst (only besting Micron and Actel)."

I find it funny how Intel has invested $500,000,000 in Micron, the company who expects to be profitable the quarter after next.

I know why Intel invested in Micron, but besides that, it looks like even Intel invests in companies who say "give us one or two more quarters".

As far as AMD - I'm getting tired of waiting for that next quarter.

<At a third of that value, it seems to me that only a fool would write off the potential of the Athlon to seriously alter the financial characteristics of the MPU business.>

I know you already gave that disclaimer concerning the use of the word "potential," but come on, Tad. AMD has always been about potential.

Tad, re:it seems to me that only a fool would write off the potential of the Athlon to seriously alter the financial characteristics of the MPU business.

C'mon. Of course, nothing is known for certainty in the future. But, the probability is very high that K7 will not succeed financially: AMD losing money hand-over-fist the past several quarters (money they can't throw into future R&D or marketing), AMD's poor manufacturing record, Intel's past response (slashing prices, faster technology intro) when AMD encrouches, AMD's poor reputation in the commercial segment, market shifting to lower cost components while K7 is much higher cost, etc. I could go on-and-on. The point is, the chances of K7 succeeding is very slim and the current price reflect this. Investing in AMD is like betting on a 99-1 horse to win. It could happen, but not very likley.
