Hal, You can also buy 2 NIC's for $15-20 each and connect them with a crossover cable if you wanted to network two PC's peer to peer, 10BaseT.

I believe Win98 second edition has Internet Connection Sharing which would allow multiple machines on a network to share a single dial-up connection.
