SAMSUNG INVENTS NEW, IMPROVED CHIP FOR DVD - 6/25/99

Samsung Electronics has applied cutting-edge large-scale integration (LSI) design technology such as direct interface to develop and mass-produce chipsets for DVD products. The devices in question include radio frequency amplifier, digital servo and data processor chipsets.

The company will begin by using the chipsets in Samsung model DVD players. Plans also call for expanding sales into China and the Americas in the second half of this year. It expects to supply a total of 1.2 million units this year.

Development of the chipsets took nearly two years to complete. Previously the company had to import all of these devices, so by producing them locally, company officials say they'll save around $150 million by 2002. Samsung is also now in a position to compete with Sony and Toshiba in the DVD chipset market.

With the advent of digital electronics products, the DVD chipset is emerging as a leading system LSI (non-memory) device. Although the market for these devices is new, it is forecasted to grow at least 80 percent a year, reaching about $200 million in 2002.
