Kind of OT... DSL vs. Cable

On an interesting note, Charter Communications was here today to install my "pipeline" - they have to come back on Tuesday because I need an ethernet card for my Mac and sales had promised me that they would bring one.

I had the same experience with @home here... 2 service visits were required for installation and an ethernet card in my PC, which means if I get a new PC its another service call, etc. Besides being just a nuisance this high maintenance is slowing the growth of cable vs. DSL. In contrast G-lite doesn't require any on-site service.

G.lite ADSL has one huge advantage for the telcos: no "truck rolls." Standard ADSL requires a POTS ("plain old telephone service") splitter both at your home and also at the telco's office, as an interface to the analog system, to give you voice service. Which means the telco has to send a truck to your house to install that splitter -- about a five-minute, turn-four-screws job, The telcos hate truck-rolls,
